What is a miracle?

Miracles-1People argue a lot about what a miracle is and different religions and philosophies have different views about the so called “miracles”. If there is a common denominator among most of them, it is that “a miracle is a phenomenon not explained by known laws of nature.”

By “laws of nature” here it is normally implied a reference to the physical laws, about which humanity has managed to gather considerable knowledge.

Apollo Moon LandingOur knowledge of physical laws permits us to build a 400 ton jumbo jet that will take off and fly long distances with lots of people inside. We are even able to send people to the outer space, landing on the moon and eventually on some planets. This would be considered a miracle – a deed of Gods – by the cave men; perhaps even by men in the middle age, when some rudimentary scientific knowledge already existed. We know better now. We know that these remarkable deeds are simply a result of humanity’s knowledge of the physical laws, which permits us to use such laws to our benefit and accomplish remarkable goals.

I think that in terms of spiritual laws humanity is still in a stage comparable to that of the cave age. Whenever some spiritual process causes the materialization of surprising physical outcomes we attribute them to fate, if they are unpleasant, or to a miracle, if they are pleasurable. I believe that as humanity evolves spiritually we will, someday, be capable of knowledgeably and adequately use the spiritual laws to manifest desirable emotions, feelings and even physical phenomena. Some gurus, shamans and spiritual healers are already doing that, to the astonishment of many.

Einstein EquationWe were very fortunate to have had the contributions of people like Isaac Newton, Max Planck, Enrico Fermi, Paul Dirac, Albert Einstein and so many others who put the physical laws in clear terms, even in the form of mathematical equations, accurately describing cause and effect relationships in the physical world. What we need now are the spiritual counterparts of those scientists, who can state spiritual laws with similar clarity, to foster the spiritual evolution of humanity as a whole.

When our universe was created, the physical and spiritual laws governing that creation were already there, permeating the infinite divine consciousness that simply is.

CampfireThese laws are perfect and impersonal. If you ignore the laws of thermodynamics and touch a piece of hot charcoal or the flames of a fire, you will get burned (unless you know how to activate some higher level non-physical principles that supersede physical laws). You will get burned regardless of whether you are a good person or a bad one; and regardless of your good or bad motives to do it. Any fire-fighter will endorse that.

Intentions are not relevant to the outcome of physical phenomena (although scientists are now beginning to detect their influence in sub-atomic physical phenomena). Conversely, spiritual leaders claim that, in spiritual terms, the intentions behind our deeds are more important than the deeds themselves.

Spiritual Interaction 3Like physical laws, the spiritual laws are always at work, governing the outcome of our thoughts, intentions, feelings and deeds. When we unwittingly (out of ignorance) infringe spiritual laws, we face the consequences anyway; and these are not “punishments”; just like the favorable outcomes are not rewards. They are simply the impersonal result of our interaction with the prevailing laws (physical and non-physical). These laws are divinely perfect and lead us all, in search of well being, to evolve towards light and purity, through trial and error, self observation and self confrontation.
