1. Make lists (in writing) of what you consider to be the positive and the negative aspects of your parents (make separate lists for + and – aspects, for your father and for your mother).
2. Take the list of the positive and negative aspects of your own personality (which you prepared in your previous Self Confrontation exercise) and compare it with those of your parents. For each trait of your own personality, indicate which of your parents (Father or Mother) had the same trait. If you think both your parents exhibited a given trait, mark it with both F and M.
Count the number of occurrences in which you have a positive personality trait that was common to your father. Do the same counting regarding the negative aspects. Do the same counting of positive and negative aspect that are common traits for you and your mother.
Build a summary table somewhat like this:
My own personality traits |
Common to my Father |
Common to my Mother |
|
Positive (virtues): | 12 | 06 | 07 |
Negative (faults): | 09 | 04 | 09 |
Total: | 21 | 10 | 16 |
Observe which of your parents had a stronger influence on your personality. Which one influenced most on the positive and on the negative traits you find in yourself?
