Notes on PL-158 The Ego’s Cooperation or Obstruction of the Real Self

<- To Work Program

Humanity’s unhappiness is due to ignorance of and lack of contact with the real self; and to ignorance of the relation of the ego with respect to the real self. The ego can facilitate or obstruct the manifestation of the real self, depending on the person’s level of consciousness and identification with the ego.

The ego can only memorize, learn, collect other people’s creative knowledge, repeat, and copy. It is equipped to remember, to sort out, to select, to make up the mind, to move in a certain direction – outward or inward. It does not have the capabilities of the real self, whose intuition and creativity render you more alive, more fulfilled, and steadily stronger.

By identifying themselves with their (limited) ego, humans become frightened, insecure and inadequate. They then look for substitute pleasures, which, in extreme cases, may take the form of addictions. When you are identified with your ego, you cannot let go of the ego controls, as this would be felt as annihilation. To achieve happiness, you must let go of the ego controls. You must therefore gradually let go of the identification with the ego.

The ego, a split-off particle of the vaster consciousness, must be integrated into its origin. (Just like the spirits that evolve in the Earth sphere must be integrated back into the light.) It is the ego’s task to decide to serve the real self. It musk seek and facilitate the contact; then step aside and let the real self come forth with its intuition and inspiration to direct and set the pace of the individual path. For this to be possible, some conditions apply:

♦ You must have the courage to be in your own truth and morality; not the external morality dictated by external authorities or society at large.

♦ You must seek and acknowledge any traces of selfishness, cruelty, self-centeredness, greed, or dishonesty in you and be willing to eliminate them.

Fear of death exists only when one’s sense of self is strongly attached to the ego self. An intellectual acceptance of the real self as a philosophical precept will not alleviate fear of death because it cannot give a sense of reality and true experience of the real self.

The fear of life is also justified when one’s sense of identification is strongly attached to the ego. The ego is adapted exclusively to the level of duality. This is inadequate for approaching most of life’s problems. Therefore, the ego cannot find solutions and always feels trapped and anxious. This leads to the fear of life.
