Exercise 8: Free versus controlled flow of emotions

<- To Work Program

Think for a moment about how you relate to your emotions. Consider the following questions and make notes about your answers.

♦ Is it common for you to show your emotions without restrictions? If so, how do people react when you show your emotions in all of their radiance? Do you enjoy expressing your emotions in this way? Would you rather manifest your emotions in a more controlled way?

♦ Is there a difference in the way you express your positive emotions, like joy, happiness, contentment, friendship, love, in comparison with negative emotions like sadness, frustration, anger, etc.? To which type do you apply closer control?

♦ Do you enhance or soften some of your emotions to suit their intensity to the current circumstances? For example, would you show your grief in an enhanced manner at a funeral of a family member of a close friend? Would you disguise your sadness for some personal mishap if you are at a friend’s birthday party?

♦ How spontaneous and truthful are you in feeling and expressing your emotions on your daily life?

Perfectionism makes many people think that they must control their emotions and express them in accordance with the circumstances. This leads to the manipulation of emotions, which impairs emotional growth.
